Shirin Ebadi on VOA

As I have said before, it is always very hard for me to criticise those who are socially and politically active inside Iran. It would be very inappropriate for the likes of me to do that.

Likewise, I am not against Shirin Ebadi, I want her to be successful in defending those who have suffered human rights abuses inside Iran. However I just can not digest and understand one of her replies to the VOA presenter last night.

When the VOA presenter, Bijan Farhoody, asked Shirin Ebadi about her Nobel Prize lecture in Oslo, and why she spent so much time on non-Iran related issues in her lecture, Ebadi replied "Everything has its time and its place, where 90% of the audience are non-Iranians, then I should talk more about international issues, but when talking to an Iranian audience I will talk about Iran related issues"

But Shirin Ebadi did not talk more about the international issues and less about Iran related issues in her Nobel lecture. She did not say ANYTHING about Iran related issues in her Noble Prize lecture! and what sort of a logic is it that says in front of foreigners we should talk less about Iran? What is the point of talking about things we already know amongst ourselves?? Yes we Iranians know the Islamic Republic laws are discriminatory against women, children, religious minorities, personal and political freedoms, etc. The point is to tell the outside world about these human rights abuses who do not know these things!

I asked Ebadi similar question when she spoke in Imperial College in London, during Ganji's hunger strike, but she chose not to answer the question.

I think Ebadi shows a lack of judgement by the way she decides what to say in front of what audience.

What I do admire about Shirin Ebadi however, is her constant defiance of Islamic Republic "elections". Unlike other Iranian pseudo-intellectuals outside Iran, who seem to be yearning to find a way to go back to Iran, like Massoud Behnood and Ibrahim Nabavi who keep encouraging Iranians to go to the "ballot boxes" and choose between the bad and the worse, Ebadi has always consistently mocked the Islamic Republic "elections".

"One can not call these a free election, when opposition is not allowed to have a campaign platform and the candidates are vetted by the Guardian Council, therefore I will not take part in such elections" Ebadi has frequently said in her lectures to Iranian audiences.

I found it particularly tickling when Ebadi was talking about how Saudi has a bad democracy, and Norway a good one and in the middle is Iran and US is just a little bit better... and then went on to tell Farnudi if he knows that this is a two party state and there are no independents... She is simply dellusional. She thinks that because she was given this award, she is suddenly the expert of everything... that's just like Ahmadinejad who thinks that just because he is the president of the IR, he should give soccer advice to the Team Melli... Delusionals all around I tell you.

If she got a Nobel prize then she has to bad mouth the US, it’s required.

To Annonymous,

This is how dictatorships start. When mortal human beings are placed above criticism. I am sure, even Shirin Ebadi would be horrified by your over indulgence in boot licking.

To Azarmehr

On the contrary Mr. Azarmehr.
Let Mrs. Ebadi speak about her opinion of me or my admiration of her or your unintelligent criticism of her.
You on the other hand will only show what a hypocrite you are by labelling people as BOOT LICKERS.
I on the other hand do not criticise you for your many indulgences about your photographs, the way you dress, the company you keep or your trips here and there and do not call you names because of your opinions.
Dictatorships starts when people like you start to believe that their opinions are the only correct way of thinking and go on a pulpit and preach to others and denigrate other peoples views.

To Annonymous:

So are we allowed to ask Shirin Ebadi questions or not?

"Shirin Ebadi is the greatest Women and the Shiniest Symbol of the last 50 years of Iranian culture. How dare YOU to criticise someone this GREAT! "

Thats bootlicking alright! ;)

Well, at lest she has Been awarded a Nobel prize, which you on the other hand will never receive, other then in your dreams.

Azarmehr said...

So she has received a Nobel Peace Prize, as did Jimmy Carter, Yasser Arafat, Menachem Begin, Kissinger....

Does that mean when a person receives a Noble Peace Prize, they are above criticism and no one has the right to question their judgement??

Pathetic thirld world mentality you seem to have! Take a brief break from your boot licking and open your mind a bit.

Instead of an intelligent conversation, you insist in using foul language.
Unfortunately you have got the wrong end of the stick.
I am not saying you should not criticises her, and I am certainly not saying that she is above criticism.
Constructive criticism has its place in any reasonable and intelligent discourse as long as it is conducted in a civilised and reasonable manner.
You must respect her (and my) opinions.
If she believes in what she says and does what she sees fit, that is her business.
You and anybody else can certainly ask her what you like and she has every right to answer you in any way, shape or form.
In your case I would not think it would be worth her while to even speak to you, let alone answer your questions and frankly I do not blame her if that was true as you are not worth talking too.

Azarmehr said...

Thanks for changing your mind from your previous position
"How dare YOU to criticise someone this GREAT!"

Merely typing "intelligent conversation" does not make your point of view intelligent. You need to stop talking out of your arse too.

Anonymous said...

You have called me a closed minded, pathetic third world boot licker who is talking out of his arse.
Dispensing these derogatory terms does not help in conducting any kind of an intelegent conversation and it will certainly not heart me.
But it clearly shows you up for what you really are.
a petty minded unintelligent ignorant show off.

Azarmehr said...

How can it "HEART" you? when you are so "intelegent" :))))

Mr. Pasha,
Perhaps you would like to enlighten me of another Iranian women who has achieved as much as Mrs. Ebadi has in the promotion of human rights in Iran and has achieved so much favourable publicity for the Iranian women/people through out the world.

Azarmehr said...

Look, why don't you get the point? How thick can you be?? No one is denying Ebadi's achievements! The point is that you started this time wasting thread by saying that no one should criticise someone so Great! Your statement is there. You cant get out of it.

By making such revolting, sycophant remarks, you yourself, are reducing Shirin Ebadi, to an idol of fans with two brain cells between their ears..

Thank you Mr. Pash.
I will follow your suggestion and read about Mrs. Manochehrian.
Fro the sake of a balanced view i have included the following for those who are not familiar with Mrs, Ebadi’s life history.
Dr. Shirin Ebadi*, J.D., was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize for Peace.
She received this award for her tireless efforts to promote human
rights, in particular, the rights of women, children, and political
prisoners in Iran. She is the first Muslim woman to receive the Nobel
Peace Prize, and only the fifth Muslim to receive a Nobel Prize in any
field. Dr. Ebadi was one of the first female judges in Iran. She
served as president of the city court of Tehran from 1975 to 1979 and
was the first Iranian woman to achieve Chief Justice status. She,
along with other women judges, was dismissed from that position after
the Islamic Revolution in February 1979. She was made a clerk in the
court she had once presided over, until she petitioned for early
retirement. After obtaining her lawyer's license in 1992, Dr. Ebadi
set up private practice. As a lawyer, Dr. Ebadi has taken on many
controversial cases defending political dissidents and as a result has
been arrested numerous times. She has published over 70 articles and
12 books dedicated to various aspects of human rights. Dr. Ebadi’s
latest book, Iran Awakening: A Memoir of Revolution and Hope, was
published by Random House in May 2006.
